Simeon’s tenacity landed him his dream job
Read about how Simeon's hard work and determination paid off
Simeon, 20 from Haringey, finished his GCSEs during the midst of the pandemic and left school without a clear career path ahead. He was keen to explore construction but faced a number of setbacks and was struggling to secure site experience, as well as identify a role he was passionate about. He was referred onto our Building Opportunities programme by his local council employment service with the aim of receiving additional support and access to opportunities that would enable him to kickstart his career.
Simeon was matched with CYT’s Haringey coach, who supported him to first achieve a Level 1 qualification in Health & Safety and then get a CSCS card – opening doors to a range of incredible site-based careers. We were then able to utilise our extensive Haringey employer network to organise a five-day work experience placement for Simeon. This enabled him to spend time shadowing a range of trades and seeing them in action – including electricians, labourers and steel fixers. He found the labouring role the most interesting, as he really liked the idea of supporting and learning from a variety of different trades on site. He was also keen on having a hands-on, physical role as he enjoys an active lifestyle.
Feeling inspired after his experiences on site, he began working with his CYT coach to create a compelling CV and cover letter and to search for suitable opportunities. One labouring role at a major design and build company particularly appealed to Simeon because of the fantastic progression opportunities and chance to work with a range of established trade workers. He applied and was delighted to be invited to interview – where the panel were so impressed by his dedication and enthusiasm; they asked him to start immediately! Simeon is now thriving in his new role and is excited about the career path ahead of him.
