Hetvi discovered a creative career in the construction industry
Read about Hetvi's creative career
Hetvi, 17 from Lewisham, always knew she wanted to pursue a career where her creative talents could shine. She was interested in construction but didn’t know how she could harness her creativity in a career in the industry. She joined Broadgate Future Talent – a collaborative partnership between Construction Youth Trust (CYT), British Land and Sir Robert McAlpine (SRM) – and through this, was taken through a series of experiences that set her on a path to a successful and rewarding career.
Hetvi’s first step with Broadgate Future Talent was to take part in our three-day Building Future Skills programme jointly hosted by SRM and Gardiner & Theobold. During the programme, she was introduced to a broad spectrum of industry experts from Broadgate employers including architects and quantity surveyors and was able to discuss their roles and career paths with them. She found herself drawn to roles in architecture, due to its creative element, and was keen to discover more about this side of construction and the built environment.
Next, Broadgate Future Talent enabled Hetvi to explore this interest further by enrolling on a five-day work experience placement with an employer she had met on the BFS – London-based architecture practice and Broadgate partner, Allford Hall Monaghan Morris. Hetvi shadowed architects working on exciting London projects and was immersed in activities such as learning how to digitally create 3D models and scale drawings.
Hetvi ended her work experience week feeling inspired and motivated. Having experienced the role of an architect first-hand, connected with industry professionals, and learnt more about the career path options, she was convinced architecture was the career for her.
Hetvi is currently working with her CYT coach to secure more work experience placements and continue developing her skills in the sector. She plans to start working on applications for university and degree apprenticeships in architecture in the coming months, and we look forward to supporting her further on her exciting career journey ahead.
Construction Youth Trust works in local communities across London and North Kent, targeting areas with a high proportion of low-income households and significant construction and regeneration.
