From work experience to job offer!
Read about Stacey's journey from work experience to job offer!
Stacey joined our Pathways to Professional Careers programme in Barking & Dagenham when she was 16 and considering her next steps after school. Pursuing a career in the construction and built environment sector had not been on her radar until she attended one of our introductory sessions which gave her a glimpse into the range of inspiring careers available. Stacey was intrigued and wanted to explore the industry further – while keeping her career prospects open and gaining tailored support to help her transition into the world of work.
Stacey worked closely with her CYT coach to develop her employability skills through mock interviews, CV masterclasses and 1-2-1 application support. She was encouraged to step outside her comfort zone by adopting leadership roles in group projects and networking with industry volunteers. This helped boost her self-confidence and readiness for the workplace.
Using our extensive employer network, we were able to arrange a work experience placement for Stacey with one of the UK’s largest construction companies – Wates. Stacey shadowed a project manager and was immersed in their daily responsibilities and tasks, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions about their role and career pathway. She was so inspired that, by the end of the placement, she felt she’d discovered her future career and decided to apply for an apprenticeship with Wates.
Stacey utilised the skills she had learnt through CYT in her application. It helped that, having an established relationship with many of the on-site team during her placement, she already felt comfortable with the work environment and company culture. This boosted her confidence, making the application process less daunting.
When Stacey was invited to an assessment centre and interview, she felt well-prepared thanks to her practice sessions with CYT. Confident and self-assured, she was offered the position! She is now excited to be starting her Planning Management Apprenticeship with Wates in September. We’re delighted for her!
Construction Youth Trust works in local communities across London and North Kent, targeting areas with a high proportion of low-income households and significant construction and regeneration.
Our Pathways To Professional Careers programme supports students (aged 16-18) interested in pursuing professional pathways, with a priority focus on those from disadvantaged backgrounds and underrepresented groups. Research shows that young people from well-off backgrounds are 80% more likely to be in a professional job. Pathways aims to level the apprenticeship playing field, helping young people overcome barriers and access rewarding higher-level and degree apprenticeship opportunities and professional careers.
